COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE, OR (KPTV) -

Search crews located a man lost with his dog in steep off-trail terrain in the Columbia River Gorge.

Deputies said Simon Kaine, 25, of Milwaukie, called 911 at 2 p.m. to report he was lost and could not find his way back to where he parked at Angel's Rest Trailhead overflow lot.

Kaine told dispatchers that he did not take the Angel's Rest trail, instead venturing out on a small unmarked and not maintained trail.

He followed a dry creek bed and got turned around, according to deputies. He tried to work his way back to where he started but ended up in a ravine with no clear course out.

Deputies were able to get his cell phone GPS reading and determined the area he was thought to be in was significantly off any established trail.

The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team said in intermittent phone contact with Kaine, they learned he does not have any more food and is out of water. He also was not carrying any other emergency supplies.

At 6:30 p.m. Monday, rescue crews located Kaine and his dog. They said he was extremely thirsty, but both Kaine and his dog were in good spirits.

Deputies said the area they were in was very steep. A second search and rescue team arrived to help guide them back down to the trailhead.
