NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The road over Percy Priest Dam will be closed during the workweek this summer so the Army Corps of Engineers can maintain spillway gates.

Bell Road will be blocked weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning June 2 and ending July 11, the Corps of Engineers said Thursday.

The road is a popular alternative to the interstate for drivers in Hermitage. Officials said they are working to notify people who live nearby and often use the route.

The maintenance involves replacing chains that control spillway gates, and will require a large crane to reach the gates and spillway. The work is required every five years.

Bell Road will be open on weekends, and access to the popular greenway trailhead should not be affected.

The road was closed for several months in 2011 so workers could build containment structures at the dam.
