Caught on camera: Local dealership broken into and vandalized

Posted: Updated:

A local car dealership was broken into and vandalized by someone trying to steal a car, and the whole crime spree was caught on camera.

It happened in the early morning hours of Thursday at Reece Auto Sales in Oregon City.

The owner tells FOX 12 a good Samaritan was walking by the shop around 7 a.m. on Thursday and noticed a broken window at the dealership and called police. When police arrived they found the place ransacked.

"We're just furious. This is a small family business trying to be successful," said owner Steve Reece.

Reece says the man broke through their office window and bled all over the floor. The dealerships's surveillance cameras catch the man stumbling from car to car on the lot trying to get them to start.

"He started on one end, and kept coming down the line," said Reece.

The video shows the man eventually hopping into a pickup truck where he manages to turn on the car's lights. But then apparently realizes he's not going anywhere, and falls out of the driver's seat.

"The guy is obviously out of it.  He's got to be drunk," said Reece.

Reece says in the process of it all the man damaged at least seven cars, and also vandalized the lot behind them.

"He just basically ripped out the whole lower left section of the dash on one car. It looks like he was trying to hot wire it and got mad when he couldn't," said Reece.

Reece says the burglar also snagged some money, along with some odd items like Febreze and toilet paper and then walked down McLaughlin Boulevard like nothing ever happened.

It's a frustrating sight to owners whose livelihood is tied to the dealership.

"We are a small business and it's tough. You work really hard and you think you go home at night and yeah my stuff's fine. And you know, sometimes it's not," said Reece.

The dealership says they are offering their own $500 reward for information on the man that leads to an arrest.

If you know anything at all about the burglar call the Gladstone Police Department.
