Girl raising money for cancer research: "The cure can work for every kid in the world, even me"

Posted: Updated:

A local 11-year-old girl is taking on a fundraising challenge in hopes of finding a cure for cancer.

"Kick cancer's booty forever!" Lexy Delos Reyes said.

It's the slogan she lives and fights by, all the way down to wearing it on her purple high-tops.

"That makes me strong and happy and really brave," Lexy said.

So, when Phil Knight challenged OHSU to raise $500 million for cancer research with the promise to match it, Lexy and her older brother came back with their own challenge.

"We've been doing the challenge that she and I came up with," Lexy's brother, Cameron Delos Reyes said. "It's called a dollar to kick cancer's booty."

It's a fitting name for their Facebook-based fundraising. People donate to Lexy and Cameron who in turn pass it on to OHSU's bigger challenge.

The billion dollar program would help develop ways of early detection and more precise diagnosis.

Lexy knows just how important both those things are.

"The cure can work for every kid in the world, even me, Alexa," she said.

When she was just a toddler doctors found a brain tumor. She's had nine surgeries, years of chemotherapy and medical trials.

Fox 12 first met her in November when she was signed to a college basketball team as an honorary player for Warner Pacific.

It's that kind of support that her brother said has helped with their fundraising and helped with Lexy's fight.

"It's great to know that people are helping out with this," Cameron said. "It's great to know that people care. It really makes us feel better, that we're not alone."

He said, with that, they'll keep kicking cancer's booty one donation and one treatment at a time.

"We just never give up. We never give up," Cameron said.

"I hope it works for a cure, to cure cancer forever," Lexy said.
