Giles County officer involved shooting

GILES COUNTY, VA - UPDATE: 7:55 p.m.

Press Release from Virginia State Police:

At approximately 3 p.m. Sunday (May 18), a Pearisburg Police official initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle in the Town of Pearisburg. During the course of the traffic stop, the suspect driver was shot. Rescue was immediately called to the scene and the adult male driver was transported to a nearby hospital, where he died a short time later. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Police Shooting Investigative Team out of the Wytheville Field Office has responded to the scene to investigate the incident. The incident remains under investigation at this time.

We are working to get more information about an officer involved shooting in Giles County. Dispatch tells WSLS one person is being transported and the officer is okay.

According to our NBC affiliate the Giles County Sheriff's Office says the incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Ingram Village United Methodist Church, near the intersection of Virginia and Neal streets in Pearisburg.
