Scientifically-proven strategies to make you a happier person

Posted: Updated:

Studies show that a strong majority of Americans, even those that are professionally successful, with notable wealth, are unhappy in their jobs.

According to a Gallup study, the well-being of Americans has not improved in the past six years. Other reports reveal that 85 percent are unhappy in their current jobs.

Jackie Ruka, Founder of the "Get Happy Zone" personal and professional development organization, offers this list of 10 scientifically-proven happiness strategies:

  • Savor ordinary events: Reflecting back on moments of your day, even those you might usually hurry through, is a worthwhile effort.
  • Avoid comparisons: Focus on your own personal achievements instead of comparing yourself to others. Remind yourself of personal and professional achievements that have enriched your life.
  • Put money low on the list: Studies show that those who put money high up on their priority list are at greater risk for depression.
  • Have meaningful goals: Strive for something significant.
  • Take initiative at work: Be open to helping others and doing additional tasks.
  • Make friends and treasure family: Sometimes we underestimate the importance of such connections.
  • Fake it until you make it: Try to be optimistic; try to smile even when you don't feel like it.
  • Keep a gratitude journal: This is an excellent tool for redirecting your thoughts.
  • Get moving: Exercise releases endorphins; the feel-good hormone.
  • Serve others: Doing things for others can help you feel better with yourself.
