Hidden elevator in Camas led to child porn, marijuana grow room

CAMAS, WA (KPTV) -

Court documents say a Camas man hid thousands of images of child pornography and a marijuana growing operation inside a building behind his home.

Thursday, he began serving five years and eight months in federal prison for those crimes.

Court documents and pictures show he went to elaborate lengths to keep it all hidden.

Inside a shed, 63-year-old Kenneth Edward Smith built a secret elevator operated by what looked to be a normal glue can.

FBI agents found it when they raided the property late last July.

The elevator led investigators to a marijuana grow room with more than 200 plants. They also uncovered a computer with more than 8,000 images and videos of child porn.

Court documents said the computer was also controlling the watering system for the pot.

They said Smith was downloading and sharing the porn, and making hundreds of thousands of dollars from the marijuana.

They describe Smith as "intelligent" and say he knew "exactly what he was doing" and took "elaborate steps" to hide it.

Smith told investigators some of his criminal behavior stemmed from a break-up, but later admitted to collecting child porn for more than a decade.

Federal prosecutors said he also failed a lie detector test when asked if he'd sexually abused children.
