SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Abandoned boats are presenting a problem on local waterways.

Marion County deputies said they've responded to several abandoned boats in the Willamette River in the past month.

Investigators believe people who don't know how to properly dispose of old boats are just letting them go in the river.

Not only do abandoned boats pose a threat to swimmers and boaters, deputies said they also lead to an emergency response from law enforcement and firefighters.

Marion County Marine Patrol Sgt. Shane Burnham said because an abandoned boat could be a boater in distress, they have to treat it like an emergency situation.

Anyone caught setting a boat adrift with the intent to abandon it on the waterway could be charged with a crime.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office suggests contacting a local auto recycler for assistance if you don't know the proper way to dispose of an old boat.
