Caught on camera: Brazen thief steals rugs from Portland business

Posted: Updated:

A theft suspect is caught on camera walking out of a southeast Portland business with two expensive rugs tucked under his arm.

It happened Sunday afternoon at Marion's Carpet Warehouse on Grand Avenue.

Employee Angie Milligan said she was suspicious of the man after seeing him pick up a pair of rugs and then put them back down.

"Just because we don't normally allow people to carry their own rugs to their cars," she said. "So, he had two in his hands. As soon as he saw me walk in the door, he kind of set them down and wandered away from them."

Milligan told FOX 12 she kept her eye on the man as he walked around the showroom with his phone to his ear.

When she began helping another customer, the suspect made his move.

Surveillance video shows him grabbing the rugs and walking out of the store onto a busy southeast Portland street in the middle of the day.

"I just couldn't believe somebody having the nerve or the gall, not only just take them, but walk down the street with them," Milligan said.

Each rug was worth $300. Workers at the family-run business said the financial hit isn't as frustrating as the brazen way the man ripped them off.

If you know anything about the suspect or this case, you're asked to call Portland police.
