Salem school using 'Buddy Bench' to fight bullying

SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A Salem elementary school has come up with a new way to prevent bullying and make every student feel included. They call it the "Buddy Bench."

An Eagle Scout and volunteers built two of the benches at Myers Elementary School a couple weeks ago.

The idea is that if kids ever feel bullied or left out, they just take a seat on the bench. Other students take notice and take it upon themselves to play with and include the student.

The school counselor, Julie Stroinski, says it seems to be working.

"We've noticed increased friendships between classes, and honestly, fewer incidents of kids being left out at recess, based on teacher reports. So it's been a really welcome addition to our community so far," said Stroinski.

Stroinski says the Buddy Bench idea originated in Germany and caught on through social media.
