A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting after a traffic stop in southeast Portland on Wednesday morning.
Milwaukie police officers attempted a traffic stop at Southeast 52nd and Harney Street, a part of the city of Portland that lies in Clackamas County.
Investigators said there was a short chase that ended on Southeast 37th and Johnson Creek Boulevard.
"I was in my house and then I heard the white car zooming down the street and I see all these cop cars. Then I see the cop cars surround the white car, and the white car tried to get out and hit the cop car in front," said Kristina Young, who heard the gunfire.
Police said the suspect driving the car was not cooperative. Two officers fired at the suspect, striking him at least once.
"We've had people round the corners and crash and you hear sirens and stuff, but I've never heard gunshots here in the whole 22 years I've lived here. You know it's society, it's the way it is," said Teri Zumbush, who lives nearby.
The officers called for cover and immediate medical response. Police said they also began CPR on the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a Portland hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on the suspect to determine the exact cause of death and to confirm his identity.
The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team and the Portland Police Bureau are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances of the shooting and what led the officers to fire their weapons. When the investigation is complete, it will be reviewed by the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office.
The two officers will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure for the Milwaukie Police Department.
The names of the officers and the suspect are not being released at this time.
Johnson Creek Boulevard, between 32nd and 42nd avenues, was closed for most of the day as detectives investigated.
