One person died in a fire that destroyed several apartments early Thursday morning, the Vancouver Fire Department said.

The fire started a little after midnight at the Sun Pointe apartment complex on Southeast Park Crest. Firefighters called in a second alarm as the flames grew to nearly 20 feet in the air.

Eight fire engines fought the fire and were able to contain it to just one building, though six apartments were destroyed. They're so badly damaged that firefighters won't be able to go in to see if anyone was there.

Neighbors told firefighters one man was unaccounted for and said he worked a night shift, so they hoped he wasn't home at the time of the fire. The identity of the deceased resident has not been released.

A couple who lives in one of the apartments said neighbors banged on their door to make sure they got out safely.

"We were asleep, and they came around and woke us up, said that they had a fire," said Bill Marbut.

"It was in the apartment next to ours," said Shirley Marbut. "There was a lot of flames, and they said, 'There's a fire, get out.'"

The fire is still under investigation.
