SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Police arrested a Springfield woman who they said swindled an elderly woman out of $10,000 less than one day after they released her photo to the public.
Linda Nadeau, 58, of 217 Steele St., was arrested at 995 State St. at about 8:15 Friday morning. Police charged her with larceny over $250, larceny over $250 from a person over 60 years old, entering a dwelling at night without breaking-in by false pretense, according to an arrest report.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told CBS 3 that Nadeau found a trailer for sale in Springfield in May and convinced the elderly owner that she was going through hardships.
Nadeau told the victim she was close to receiving a $500,000 settlement from New Hampshire. The victim felt bad and allowed her to stay at her home with her husband until her settlement went through. During that time, the victim had her debit and credit cards stolen from her, Delaney said.
Over the course of the next four weeks approximately $10,000 in withdrawals were made all over Western Mass from the victim's accounts.
The victim also told police that Nadeau had given her wine that made her black out, and that she thinks she was drugged. The victim said she was always tired during the day when Nadeau was living with her, which was abnormal for her, Delaney said.
"Nadeau is not new to this game and there are other victims out there who suffered the same type of loss at her devious crime," Delaney said.
Nadeau finally told the victim that her settlement had come through and that $83,000, in addition to the balance of her money for the purchase of the trailer was waiting with her realtor in South Carolina. When the victim contacted her realtor, that is when she realized she was scammed and contacted police, Delaney said.
The crime is being investigated by the Springfield Police Department Detective Bureau and arrest warrants are pending.
