VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

Some Washington residents will have a new set of rules to abide by this Independence Day that authorities hope will lead to fewer injuries from fireworks.

The new law in Vancouver limits fireworks sales to just three days and allows for fireworks to be set off on only July Fourth.

Clark County officials said 16 people were hurt by fireworks in 2013. They said even legal fireworks can be dangerous if you use them incorrectly or modify them.

Firefighters said the safest way to light a mortar is on flat ground away from people, with a hose and a bucket of water nearby.

Firefighters and police both said they will be increasing their fireworks patrols this year to make sure everyone is following the law.
