A woman ran up to a police officer during a traffic stop in Cannon Beach to report a man had just attempted to rape her.

It happened at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 101, just north of the Highway 26 junction.

The 37-year-old Seaside woman was wearing only a shirt, according to the Clatsop County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the area with assistance from Oregon State Police and the Seaside and Cannon Beach police departments.

The suspect, identified as 61-year-old William Cox Jr. of Warrenton, was found hiding in tall grass north of a landscaping business.

Deputies said Cox refused to follow their orders and attempted to get away. At that point, Sr. Deputy Thomas Phillips deployed his K-9 partner Pax to capture the suspect.

Cox was taken into custody just after 2 a.m. Thursday. He was first taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the K-9 capture before being booked in the Clatsop County Jail.

Cox is facing charges including attempted rape, sodomy, coercion and harassment.

Investigators said Cox works at a business near the landscaping center. It was not revealed if the victim was known to him.

Anyone with additional information about the suspect or this case is asked to call Detective Ryan Humphrey at 503-325-8635.
