Photo of snake similar to one missing in Salem neighborhood from the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
SALEM, OR (KPTV) -
A big pet snake escaped and is on the loose in Salem.
Deputies were called to a home on the 800 block of Treewood Lane Southeast on Thursday. The owners of a 10-foot-long red tail boa constrictor, named Nomad, said the snake has been missing for about four days.
They believe it may have slithered out of a second-story window.
The owners called authorities because of the size of the 23-year-old female snake and their close proximity to other homes.
Deputies searched the area, but found no sign of Nomad.
A man who identified himself only as "Phil" said he is a roommate of the snake's owner, and said the boa is friendly, and does not bite.
Neighbors have been told about the missing snake and were advised to be alert with pets and small children until it's found.
Estefania Nateras, who lives two houses down from where the snake was last seen, said the fact that it's missing makes her nervous.
"I was on my way to school, and I was checking everywhere to see if the snake is there," said Nateras.
The snake is green and tan in color. Despite its name, it does not have a red tail. The Marion County Sheriff's Office released a photo depicting a very similar snake to the one that is missing.
Treewood Lane is near Macleay Road and Connecticut Avenue.
Anyone who sees the missing boa constrictor is asked to call the sheriff's office at 503-588-5032.
