(CNN) - Much of America remains opposed to comprehensive immigration reform, according to a new poll.

The numbers were released as thousands of people keep crossing the nation's border illegally.

As the illegal immigration crisis unravels along the border, new numbers are suggesting a third of the country is satisfied with immigration as it is.

The same poll suggests that 41 percent of Americans today want to see a decrease in the number of legal immigrants than just two years ago.

The Gallup Poll comes a year after the U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform package.

That legislation, which stalled in Congress, is back, front and center in Washington again as lawmakers and law enforcement scramble to find a fix.

Thousands of families and unaccompanied children keep crossing into the U.S. illegally, overwhelming the nation's ability to process them.

"There's a lack of immigration judges, so some of these hearings take years. It can take two years, it can take five years," said  Tom Homan,

Executive Associate Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations of U.S. Immigration And Customs Enforcement.

Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, heads to the Rio Grande Valley this weekend.

Her stop in south Texas will come on the heels of a visit from the first lady of Honduras.

Ana Garcia Hernandez met face to face with some of the families and children who came to the U.S. from her country.

Most of the people now filling U.S. holding cells are from Central American countries.

This same south Texas region will host the U.S. House Homeland Security Committee next week.

The rare "field" hearing will he held less than five miles from the stretch of the Rio Grande now considered the epicenter of a growing crisis.
