Ironwood Hot Shots last wildfire season

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - 2014 will be the last fire season for the Ironwood Hot Shots.  That is the elite firefighting crew based out of the Northwest Fire District.

The Ironwood Hot Shots are a team of 20 that will disband at the end of the wildfire season, sometime in October.

The seven full time hot shots will go back to work within their district, while the 13 remaining are only seasonal.

According to Northwest Fire, there are more than 100 hot shot teams around the country and the overwhelming majority are funded with federal money.

The Ironwood Hot Shots are the only team paid for by a local district.  No word on whether federal money can save this wildfire resource.  Right now Northwest Fire says its goal is to boost services within their own boundaries.
