Official statements from Arizona officials on Yarnell Hill tragedy

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Official statements from John McCain and U.S. Representative Ann Kirkpatrick honoring the 19 Granite Mountain Hot Shots who lost their lives one year ago today in the Yarnell Hill wildfire.

John McCain's office released the following statement:

“One year ago today, 19 courageous wildland firefighters gave their lives battling the Yarnell Hill Fire in Yavapai County, Arizona. It was a staggering loss that still hurts our state and nation today. The Yarnell tragedy is a grim reminder of the grave risks our firefighters take every day to protect our lives and property in Arizona and across the nation.

“I hope all Americans will keep in their thoughts and prayers the Granite Mountain Hotshots and their families and loved ones who miss them so dearly. They are American heroes that Arizona can call her own, and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

Ann Kirkpatrick's office released the following statement:

“One year ago today, 19 young men were bravely doing their jobs when they lost their lives on Yarnell Hill. Across Arizona, our hearts were broken – we grieved together, paid tribute to the fallen firefighters, and pledged to work on solutions to prevent such tragedies. This year, the Slide Fire and the San Juan Fire are reminders that fire prevention is a smart investment that can help reduce risk and limit damage. Otherwise, we will continue to pay a much higher price. The families, friends and communities affected by last year’s tragedy deserve our vigilance on this issue. Our state can’t afford to continue its pattern of devastating wildfires, and our hearts can’t bear another tragedy like Yarnell.”
