Elderly Chesterfield woman jumps out window to escape house fire

Posted: Updated:

The lone occupant of the home off Midlothian Turnpike near Chippenham Parkway that caught fire Wednesday night was evaluated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries

According to fire officials, the more than 80-year-old female had to jump through a window after the fire started. She suffered several scrapes and bruises, authorities said.

The house is located along the 2400 block of Starview Lane behind the new Kroger Shopping Center.

"The shopping area was never in jeopardy given the large space," said Matt Captain Coffin with Chesterfield Fire.

The massive plume of smoke could be seen from miles away. Small explosion made the blaze all the more ominous.

"We are thankful no one was hurt or seriously injured," said Captain Coffin.

Crews navigated down a 1500 foot long driveway in sweltering conditions.

"This residence was positioned deep in the wood line," said Captain Coffin. "We practice for these types of situations over and again, but today the training paid off and the hydration paid off because we've been preaching hydration with the heat we've been enduring."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
