TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) - Carmen F. Canchola, a generous donor and volunteer in the Tucson and Nogales communities, died Sunday, June 29 with her family by her side at home. She was 83 years old.

Those closest to her described her as “an angel, a gentle loving soul whose life was devoted to her children, her beloved husband, and the people of Tucson and Nogales, Arizona.”

Canchola was born on July 16, 1931 in Villa Morelos, Mexico. She and husband Jose Canchola were married for 56 years until Jose passed in 2008. Jose was a McDonald’s owner and operator in Nogales and Tucson.

Canchola was a founding member of the Ronald McDonald House Charities board and worked with other organizations, including La Frontera Mental Health Center, Tucson/Mexico Sister Cities and the UA Foundation. She gave much of her time visiting children at St. Andrew’s Clinic and supporting the family’s Nogales McDonald’s annual Christmas party for needy children from the colonias in Nogales, Sonora.

During her tenure as First Lady of Nogales, she rallied merchants to support programs, including the Silver Foxes program that offered discounts to seniors. She cherished being considered an influence in the Latino community. She was named “Woman of the Year" by the Hispanic Professional Action Committee, a “Remarkable Mom” by Tu Nidito Children and Family Services, and the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce “Business Woman of the Year.”

Canchola is survived by her children Anthony, Roberto (Sandra), Richard (Andrea), Carmen (David), Roger (Raquel), and Mary Ellen (Steve), 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
