Abingdon homeowner shoots alleged intruder, sheriff says it was self-defense

ABINGDON, VA (WJHL) - The Washington County, VA Sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting where a homeowner shot a man who tried to force his way inside a home.

The shooting happened before 10:00 p.m. Wednesday in the 18000 block of Keeneland Drive in Abingdon, VA.

Investigators say a man who lived nearby confronted the homeowner and tried to enter his home – possibly to provoke an altercation, but the man left.

The homeowner says the man returned a few minutes later - this time, knocking on the back door.

When the homeowner opened the door, the man tried to enter the home again.

The sheriff’s office says the homeowner shot the man.

“It appears the homeowner acted properly in defending himself and his residence from forced entry by the intruder,” stated Sheriff Newman.

The alleged intruder suffered non-life threatening injuries. This case remains under investigation.
