OSHP issues 752 tickets, arrests 28 over weekend

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says their increase in troopers on the road for the holiday weekend helped keep drivers safe.

Troopers say the Fourth of July is one of the busiest holidays for them. This year, 752 people were ticketed in northwest Ohio, and 28 were arrested for impaired driving.

OSHP was out looking for traffic violations such as speeding, driving under the influence, driving aggressively or not wearing a seatbelt.

Troopers say this year was busier than normal for them. They say the goal of the increased enforcement isn't to write more tickets, but to encourage safe driving.

"There's an increased amount of traffic, obviously, because it's the weekend, so every time somebody sees a trooper, they are reminded to obey the traffic laws and hopefully are traveling a lot safer," said Sgt. Jason Metzger of the Toledo post.

Statewide, there were 12 fatal crashes over the weekend, but none of those were in northwest Ohio.
