GSU has already made a first impression with the rest of college football, upsetting Florida in Gainesville in November.
"We used to play one Division I football program every year. Now every team we play is going to be a Division I football program," new head coach Willie Fritz says. "We have to play with the same type of intensity Georgia Southern played with in that last ball game, down in the Swamp against Florida. Consistency's going to be a big key for us."
Fritz will guide the Eagles on their journey, taking over for Jeff Monken, who accepted the Army head coaching position in December.
Fritz is installing his own spread option offense, which will expand on the triple option GSU is used to running in Statesboro. He says the key to the offensive transition is how the offensive line plays.
"You're going to run routes no matter what offense you're in. The quarterback's going to be throwing it," Fritz says. "It's a lot different as far as run blocking and pass protection for the offensive line. Luckily, we have a very experience offensive line coming back."
The Eagles make their FBS debut August 30 at North Carolina State. They'll play at Georgia Tech on September 13.
