BLACKSBURG (WSLS) - New research out of Virginia Tech suggests some alternatives to cigarette smoking may not be as safe as once thought.

Millions of Americans are turning to products like the nicotine patch or e-cigarettes to help them avoid tobacco products. 

It has been known for years that chemical combinations in traditional cigarettes can lead to cancer, but researchers are now discovering that nicotine alone can still be deadly.  

It is estimated that the e-cigarette industry will bring in more than $2 billion in global sales this year. The next step for the research team is to look at the effects of long-term exposure to nicotine.
