(CNN) - Opening statements were delivered Monday in the first trial related to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Prosecutors allege Azmat Tazhayakov helped dispose of accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's items after the attack. And they say he knew the identity of the bombers before the public found out.

They say he knew exactly what he was doing when he helped a friend ditch a laptop and backpack that belonged to Tsarnaev, a classmate.

But his lawyers argue Tazhayakov did everything he could to assist the FBI. Tazhayakov is charged with obstructing justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice.

His roommate, Dias Kadyrbayev, who will have a separate trial, faces the same charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Both have pleaded not guilty.

Another friend, Robel Phillipos, pleaded not guilty to making false statements.

None of them are accused in the bomb plot itself.
