KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

Police said a man purposely used his car to run over a man who he thought was having an affair with his estranged wife, and they said he did it while she was in the car.

According to court documents, Thomas Nolan, 39, admitted to running over the man. Nolan picked up his estranged wife in Kelso on Monday and told her as they were driving home, "I have to run somebody over."

The court documents show that Nolan hit the gas when he saw Nick Peterson walking to work at Ninth Avenue and Delaware Street. Nolan's Ford Explorer jumped the curb and hit Peterson, dragging him under the SUV.

Peterson's sister-in-law, Loretta Taylor, told FOX 12 she thinks Nolan flew into a jealous rage because he thought his estranged wife was having an affair with Peterson, but she said that isn't the case. Taylor said the three have been friends for years.

Peterson suffered a broken foot, a sprained ankle, and some cuts and bruises.

Police said Nolan ran from the scene, but they caught him and took him into custody. He's in the Cowlitz County jail facing assault charges.
