CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Its a full house at the Cleveland Kennel this week. Dozens of dogs came in during the holiday weekend and they need your help to get back home or find one.

It's very clear and we hear about it often that most dogs hate fireworks and it causes a lot of them to run away -- but for some reason this year it's a bigger problem for the city of Cleveland than ever before.

"I just started here three weeks ago and everyone here tells me this is the most dogs that we've ever had," said Chief Animal Control Officer Ed Jamison.

The Cleveland Kennel is reaching its max capacity. At one point after the Fourth of July they had 156 dogs here.

"Historically it's always the biggest intake. A couple days for us with all the fireworks going off and this year was no different," stated Jamison.

Just as 19 Action News arrived to cover this story, yet another scared dog was being brought in by a man who simply found this pooch wondering in his yard in the days after the fireworks.

"We are right at the top of capacity. We can still take in dogs and as you've seen since you've been here dogs do keep coming in," added Jamison.

And keep in mind the Cleveland City Kennel is completely separate from the APL and from the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter. So if your dog ran away in the days leading up to and after the fourth, it may be in any number of places you'll need to check.

"If it has a dog license on it or a microchip we will contact them. We'll make numerous attempts to contact them. We will make arraignments for them to come pick it up but typically we don't know where the dogs came from," said Jamison.

And now that we are reaching the mandatory 72 hour hold window, it also means that many of these dogs are available and ready for adoption, and you can help them get a home instead of a cage.
