Thieves target downspouts in south Toledo neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

One Toledo neighborhood has been hit by a strange kind of theft. Now a south Toledo block watch is warning residents to guard their aluminum downspouts.

Usually with metal thefts, people think of copper, but the new target lately is aluminum. Thieves are swiping them from houses and taking them to scrap yards for a quick buck.

The thefts are occurring in the Crossgates neighborhood, near Glendale.

"I usually don't get calls about things like that, so the downspout one was a bit unusual," said block watch leader Diane Routson.

She says she is trying to warn residents of the thefts.

"They must be awful desperate to do something like that," said resident Gerald Kenczewicz. "It makes you wonder."

Routson has one main suggestion for residents in any neighborhood to protect their property:

"Always call the police," she said. "If you don't get a response from 911, at least make sure you file a report. That way, with their data-driven policing, they have the information on file."

Other ways to protect your home: install lighting, security systems or cameras.
