It's a major event that was supposed to draw thousands of people in Portland next weekend – but suddenly the "5K Foam Fest" is being canceled, and the company putting it on says it's declaring bankruptcy.
So far, no refunds are being offered.
Utah-based Round House Racing posted on its website and Facebook page Thursday, saying the company was no longer in business, had no staff or funds, and would not answer emails or phone calls. The company just completed Seattle's race and has at least 25 future events pending across several states – including Portland's – but now the people who registered seem to be out of luck.
"I'm feeling robbed," registrant Debbie Bartley told Fox 12's Kelsey Watts. "Had they just canceled for weather or something with a refund, I'd be disappointed. But I'm very angry, I'm mad, and it's not just myself, it's the thousands of other people."
Bartley found out her race was canceled when she was scrolling through Facebook and read the company's message. Other Fox 12 viewers who registered said they received an email with the same message.
"They're filing bankruptcy. That's a process, that's not just something you just wake up and decide, ‘I'm bankrupt today' and be done," Bartley added. "They've known for a while that this was coming."
Round House Racing wrote that a separate company, Red Frog Events, would be offering free registration to those affected for any of its 2014 or 2015 running events.
"We do not have a direct affiliation with Round House Racing, but fully support the running industry and those runners affected by their remaining races being canceled," a Red Frog spokesperson told Fox 12.
The owner of Round House Racing could not be reached, despite multiple attempts Thursday. The Better Business Bureau shows the company with a C+ rating.
