SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Polk County Sheriffs Sgt. Randy Whittaker died after crashing his truck on Highway 22 in Salem.

Salem Police say it happened just after 4 p.m. in the eastbound lanes near the Rosemont NW on-ramp.

Police say it appears Whittaker  had just been passed by another vehicle when he switched lanes, lost control and struck the large cement barriers along the east side of the highway.

Police add that his dog ran off after the crash but has been returned to Whittaker's family.

According to Salem Police, Whittaker had been with the Sheriffs Office for 15 years. According to the Polk County Sheriffs Office website, he worked in the jail division.

Police would like to talk to the driver of a white Dodge or Chevy pickup truck. The truck has an industrial type black flat bed and is raised with large oversize tires.

Lt.  Jim Anglemier says that driver would not be facing charges, they simply want him to come forward because he may have witnessed the crash.
