Posted: Updated:

A Saturday night shooting in the city turned into a homicide investigation.

The Springfield Police Department told CBS 3 that 27-year-old Jermaine Cowell, of Springfield, died shortly before 10 p.m. after he sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.

Police said he was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Dozens of police responded to the scene Saturday night after they said the city's shot spotter alert detected five rounds fired in the area of 163 White Street.

Police said the alert came in around 9:15 p.m.

According to police, this was not a random shooting.

Police are looking for the suspect who they said is a Hispanic male with a full beard wearing a white T-shirt, light-colored shorts.

This was Springfield's seventh homicide of 2014.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Springfield Police Detective's Bureau at (413) 787-6355.
