MT. ANGEL, OR (KPTV) -

A fire destroyed a landmark restaurant early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Markum Inn off Highway 213 in Mt. Angel at around 4:30 a.m.

The owner said the business was established in 1895, but was destroyed by a fire in 1950. The location sat vacant for 20 years, before being rebuilt in 1970.

Connie Cummings has owned the Markum Inn in its current form for the last two years.

"I don't think we have much of a restaurant left," Cummings said. "But we're going to rebuild. We're not going to give up."

Cummings said she has customers in their 90s who have been regulars at the restaurant for years. She said people regularly make the trip from Portland and Salem.

She said the building is a total loss.

Cummings said she has insurance, but she's concerned about her 23 employees.

She said business has been rapidly increasing over the last few years and while this is a setback, it isn't the end of the Markum Inn.

"I've got a lot of plans here, so I'm not going to be giving up," Cummings said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
