RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

One of three people charged in a brutal Richmond beating death will spend nearly 20 years in prison under a plea agreement.

Selena Hairston unexpectedly agreed to plead guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Samantha Myers. The deal calls for her to spend 17 years in prison.

Hairston bludgeoned Myers to death five months ago with a liquor bottle and hammer, then dumped her body. Myers' body was spotted by a passerby weeks later in a ravine not far from McGuire VA Medical Center, but police couldn't identify her at the time. So, they released pictures of Myers' tattoos and a sketch of her face which led to new tips.

Hairston was supposed to be in court for a routine motions hearing on Wednesday, but in a move that surprised even prosecutors, the 21-year-old came to court to enter a guilty plea. The plea reduced the charge from first degree to second degree murder.

Hairston's boyfriend, Jamarr Hursey is accused of the same crimes, but a check of court records shows he also is scheduled to plead guilty this week. Hairston's mother, who is also charged, is scheduled for a hearing next week.

The crime still resonates on Evert Avenue, where the family lived.

"[It] never leaves my mind," said neighbor Donald Benjamin. "You never would expect something like that in your neighborhood."

There are signs, though, of a community moving forward. The home in which the Hairstons lived and where Myers died is now for rent.

"I think as a community, we'll get over it," said Christina Taylor, whose children knew the 20-year-old victim well. "We'll pack it on up, you know, and try to move forward as much as possible."
