A Raleigh man was arrested Monday in Maryland after police say he left his 98-year-old mother in a hot truck for hours while he visited a casino.

Dwight Ridgeway McGinnis Jr., 67, of Raleigh, was charged with vulnerable adult neglect and served with an outstanding warrant after police said his mother was found inside a truck in the parking garage of Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, Md.

Police said officers were dispatched to the parking garage around 6:37 p.m. to check on the well-being of an elderly female after she was seen inside a truck with North Carolina plates.

Officers were able to locate the 98-year-old woman, who told them she had been in the truck alone for an extended period of time. Police said she arrived with McGinnis around 1:42 p.m.

Police said the woman is confined to a wheelchair and is unable to take care of herself.

"The only evidence of food or drink in the vehicle was an empty soda can," police said. "The air temperature at the time of the report was 81 degrees, and the victim was found inside the vehicle with one window only partially open."

Police said the woman was initially confused and incoherent when officers arrived, but she was able to help them locate her some after she received water and Anne Arundel County EMS examined her.

McGinnis was located by police around 7:15 p.m. and placed under arrest when he returned to his vehicle 10 minutes later.

In addition to the vulnerable adult neglect charge, McGinnis was served with an outstanding warrant for failing to appear for a driving suspended charge.
