Portland tennis courts dedicated in memory of standout player

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The tennis courts at Berkeley Park in southeast Portland are now named for a local tennis star who honed his skills there.

The Alex Rovello Memorial Courts were also given a substantial makeover, thanks to more than 1,300 people who donated money to the project, organizers said.

Rovello died in the spring of 2013 in an accident. His parents have led a yearlong fundraising effort to rehab the courts in his name.

"It's been a difficult year, but also a healing year by the amount of people who have embraced this project," said Geralyn Rovello, Alex's mother. "To see the people who loved Alex (at the dedication) the way we did, it is just so joyful to have everyone here today."

The courts dedication is considered a fitting tribute by many. Alex Rovello won four state singles titles for Cleveland High School and went on to be a standout at the University of Oregon. He was still in college when he died.

The first phase of the $175,000 project is fully funded and includes mostly improvements to the courts, organizers said. The second phase will focus on the area surrounding the courts.
