CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Team USA track and field star Torrin Lawrence has died after an interstate crash near Cordele, GA.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. Monday on Interstate 75 near exit 94.

According to a report, Lawrence's car was hit by a semi-truck after a tire blowout and came to a stop in the middle of traffic.

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock said Lawrence called for assistance from authorities, but the vehicle was not moved from the flow of traffic. Records later showed the vehicle was immobilized after the blowout.

It was not immediately clear how Lawrence died when the collision happened. Officials said he was not inside the car when the semi-truck hit it.

The driver of the truck was injured in the crash and was taken to a hospital, but was expected to be okay.

Georgia State Patrol was called to investigate the crash.

Torrin Lawrence was a Jacksonville, FL native and a member of the University of Georgia's track and field team, where he set a collegiate record during his career from 2009-2012. He captured Southeastern Conference and NCAA titles while at UGA, and still holds three school records.

The 25-year-old also earned All-American honors as a sprinter before joining Team USA.

Lawrence graduated from UGA with a degree in Sociology in May 2013. He signed to run professionally with Nike following his collegiate career. Lawrence was also a member of Team USA at the inaugural IAAF World Relays in 2014, competing on the men’s 4x400 relay.

“We were devastated to learn of Torrin's passing early this morning,” said USA Track & Field CEO Max Siegel in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and everyone who knew him. Torrin represented USATF with pride and passion, and had an incredible future ahead of him. We join those who will miss him deeply.”
