PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

F-18 Hornets will be flying over the metro area in August.

The Oregon Air National Guard's 142nd Fighter Wing is hosting F-18 Hornets from multiple Naval Air Stations to conduct training from Aug. 5-22.

Flights will launch daily after 7 a.m. and conclude before 4 p.m.

Dissimilar air training provides realistic scenarios and opportunities to hone advanced aerial tactics that could be used in potential combat situations, according to the Oregon Military Department.

The 142nd Fighter Wing was assigned to defend the skies over the Pacific Northwest under the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

They have flown more than 48,000 hours in support of this mission since Sept. 11, 2001.
