PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Gresham police said an off-duty Portland police sergeant was driving under the influence of alcohol when he slammed his 2014 Volkswagen Jetta into a fire hydrant, a fence and a yard Thursday.

James McMurray, 43, crashed his car just after 10 a.m. in the 3100 block of Southeast 190th Drive.

No one was injured in the wreck, but the crash caused about $5,000 in property damage.

Mariya Zlatova owns the fence McMurray was arrested for hitting. She said she heard the crash but didn't know what it was until a neighbor called her.

"My neighbor called me across the street," she said. "Mariya, somebody crashed into your fence. You have to get out of the house. Come here. Police are here."

Other neighbors saw the wrecked car and rushed to help. Evelyn Gardner was one of them.

"The fire hydrant was up and underneath the car and he was wedged into the fence," she said.

She said when she got closer to the crash, McMurray was out of the car and urinating on the fence he'd just hit.

"I go, ‘what are you doing?' And, he was just like [shrugs]," Gardner said. "Either he was really shook up or he was really wasted."

McMurray is an 18-year veteran with the police bureau and is assigned to North Precinct Night Relief.

He was cited, and not booked into jail, but faces charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving and two counts of criminal mischief.

The police bureau placed McMurray on paid administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation and internal review of the crash.
