Police identify victim of fatal shooting

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Police are investigating a possible carjacking and overnight shooting of a man who died of gunshot wounds after being found on an I-91 on-ramp in the city's North End neighborhood.

Just after 3 a.m., a Shot Tracker registered gunshots in the area of the McDonald's on Main Street. A short time later, police were notified of a gunshot victim on the on-ramp to Exit 9 on I-91 northbound.

The victim was identified as Jose M. Gonzalez, 44, of Chicopee. Gonzalez was transported to Baystate Medical Center and was later pronounced dead, according to state police.

West Springfield Police later located a sport utility vehicle that belonged to Gonzalez. It had been crashed into a traffic island and was abandoned on Beauview Terrace, state police said.

A man was later arrested on several warrants in that area of West Springfield, however, police determined he was not the driver of that vehicle or involved in the shooting, police said.

So far, police have not made any arrests for the shooting.

The on-ramp, which was closed while police processed the scene, was reopened shortly after 6 a.m.
