MT. ANGEL, OR (KPTV) -

A man who shot and killed himself during a police standoff left a note at the scene indicating he had strangled his ex-girlfriend's mother.

Mt. Angel police responded to a possible hostage situation early Saturday morning.

Police learned that Daniel Cuanas was inside the home of his ex-girlfriend, Elizabeth Schwartz, and her mother, Kathleen Schwartz. Cuanas was armed with guns and threatening suicide.

Elizabeth Schwartz was able to escape with her 15-month-old son and notified the police, but Kathleen Schwartz remained inside the home.

Officials responded to the scene at 2:30 a.m. and began a standoff that lasted until 10 a.m.

Negotiators contacted the suspect and made numerous attempts to have Kathleen Schwartz released safely.

Around 5 a.m. officers heard what sounded like a gunshot, and the suspect told police via telephone that he had accidentally fired a gun. This was the last communication officers had with the suspect.

At 10 a.m. officers were able to position themselves outside the home in a way that allowed them to see through a window. They were able to see the suspect sitting at a table, apparently slumped over a gun. Upon entering the home, they found Cuanas dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers also found the body of Kathleen Schwartz in the home.

The State Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Cuanas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kathleen Schwartz died from ligature strangulation, according to the medical examiner.

Police said evidence at the scene, including a note written by Cuanas, indicated he had strangled the woman.

Police said there were also indications that her death occurred sometime prior to the standoff.
