Eight-hour standoff ends in apparent murder-suicide

MT. ANGEL, OR (KPTV) -

An hourslong standoff in a Mt. Angel neighborhood ended with two dead Saturday morning.

"At first, all we heard out here were loud sounds from a PA, and we were like, 'What in the world is going on?'" neighbor Tony Morris said. "When there's a SWAT rig in your front yard, you've got to assume it's something serious."

Police said it started around 2:30 a.m. when a woman and her baby escaped the home. They said she then called officers to report her ex-boyfriend, Daniel Cuanas, was inside and threatening to commit suicide.

She reportedly told police that her mother, Kathleen Schwartz, was also in the home.

Video taken by a neighbor down the street shows officers and the SWAT team using flash bangs, negotiating over the phone and sending in cameras remotely to look inside the house.

Eight hours after the initial call, they went in.

"The SWAT team started making their way out, but nobody came out with them, nobody in handcuffs, nobody on stretchers," Morris said.

Police said Cuanas shot himself.

They call Schwartz a homicide victim, and said it's possible that she was killed before the standoff started.

While they investigate, Morris said it's the last thing he'd expect from neighbors who kept mostly to themselves.

"They seem like just normal, good neighbors," he said. "It's something you never expect. This [is] Mt. Angel, a quiet town. There's never any crime like this, much less have it happening two doors down. This is crazy."
