Shots fired outside NE Portland bar is latest incident of gang violence

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police responded to shots fired in a Northeast Portland neighborhood Saturday morning. It's the latest incident of gang violence, which numbers show has increased this summer.

"We knew what it was. We knew what it was because a fight had broken out," Marshell Hines said.

She was in the Shady Lady Tavern on Northeast Cully Saturday morning when shots were fired outside.

"We were all doing karaoke and then a fight broke out. Like in any bar, it happens," she said. "And then, we heard gunshots go across outside in front of the building."

It was outside in the parking lot. Police say someone fired a gun and then sped away.

One neighbor remembered hearing it all, down to the minute.

"I heard gunshots. I remember the time, too. It was 12:47," that neighbor said. "Me and my siblings, we heard five or six gunshots."

While the gang enforcement team takes over the investigation, it's just one of many times they've dealt with scenes like that one in the last few months.

In late July, someone shot up a home on Northeast Stanton, nearly hitting the people inside.

Around the same time, there was another shooting near 12th and Schuyler streets that left bullets in the side of a pickup truck.

Like Saturday morning's shooting, that was a close call with no victims.

But, Hines said, it was terrifying nonetheless.

"Where do you go? What do you do?" she said. "I mean, I wanted to go in the bathroom and hide. It's pretty scary."
