SANDY, OR (KPTV) -

Deputies have identified four people killed in a crash near Sandy early Monday morning.

Deputies said a neighbor called 911 at about 2:30 a.m. to report that the car had crashed into a tree and caught fire at Southeast Lusted Road and Huston Road north of Sandy.

The caller helped one of the passengers out of the back seat, but wasn't able to help anyone else before flames engulfed the car.

The three people left inside the car died at the scene, and the other passenger was airlifted to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

The driver was identified Tuesday as Brandon Mayo, 31, of Portland. The three passengers were Shalene Newland, 20, Jesse Jasso-Varsamas, 20, and Suzanne Varsamas, 39. They were all from Portland, as well.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A dog was also in the car and managed to escape. The dog suffered burns and was rushed to a veterinary hospital where it continued to recover Tuesday.

Deputies said information from the dog's microchip was used in helping to identify those in the car.

The road was closed for several hours while emergency crews and investigators responded to the scene.
