Police: Driver hit and killed cyclist after falling asleep at the wheel

Posted: Updated:

A cyclist was hit and killed near McMinnville after police said the driver of a van fell asleep at the wheel.

Emergency crews were called out to Highway 47 about two miles north of McMinnville at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said Juan Garcia, 56, of Carlton, was riding a bicycle on the paved northbound shoulder when he was hit from behind.

Police said a Chevrolet van driven by Richard King, 45, of Carlton, hit Garcia's bicycle.

Garcia was thrown off the bike and pronounced dead at the scene, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers said King had fallen asleep while driving, leading to the crash. Police said King was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

Upon completion of the investigation, Oregon State Police will review the details with the Yamhill County District Attorney and make a decision on possible enforcement in this case.

The highway was closed for four hours after the crash.
