GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

A 19-year-old man is facing child abuse and assault charges after allegedly beating his infant son, police said.

Mario Luis Portillo, 19, said he was upset because his 2-month-old son would not stop crying, according to the police report.

Portillo told police that he put his baby on a bed on Aug. 4 and he squeezed the child around his rib cage, the report said. Authorities said he also punched the child in the face and hit him in the legs.

Portillo said he convinced the boy's mother not to call the police.

On Aug. 10, the couple took the boy to Arrowhead Hospital because he was throwing up blood. The staff noticed bruising on his face and legs, and he was transferred to Phoenix Children's Hospital where police were called.

The parents initially said their babysitter dropped the child in the bathtub, but later confessed to police, according to the report.

Portillo faces four counts of child abuse and four counts of aggravated assault.
