WASHINGTON, DC (CNN) - President Barack Obama is expected to head to Estonia in eastern Europe early next month.

That's according to a statement from National Security Council Spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden.

She says the president's visit is aimed at enhancing relations between the U.S. and the Republic of Estonia.

While there, Obama is expected to meet with the president and prime minister for talks.

Hayden says Obama will also meet with the presidents of Latvia and Lithuania. Estonia and Latvia are NATO members that border Russia, and Lithuania also is part of the alliance.

She says the trip is part of an effort to reassure America's central and eastern European allies in light of the recent developments in Ukraine.

Afterward, the president is expected to head to Wales to participate in a NATO summit meeting.
