PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 29-year-old woman who died after a stabbing at an apartment complex on Barnes Road is being remembered as a friend and mother who had "a heart that was never too full for anyone."

Nicole Laube, of Forest Grove, was a mother, a wife and an aspiring bodybuilder who started working at the Timber Creek apartment complex three weeks ago.

She was working there Tuesday evening when someone attacked her outside one of the apartment buildings. The attack happened just after 5 p.m. when a man stabbed Laube with some type of sharp object. Laube then ran to a tenant, who called 911. She told someone a man in a dark hoodie stabbed her.

By the time deputies arrived, Laube was unconscious and they were unable to revive her.

Deputies immediately locked down the apartment complex and began searching for the suspect using K-9s, but they weren't able to find anyone. Many residents said they are on edge knowing the person who did this is still out there.

"It's really scary. I have a 3-year-old daughter, and if they haven't caught him yet, who knows what could happen tonight," said resident Lacy Garza.

There's no word on whether Laube knew her attacker. Because deputies don't have a detailed suspect description, they are asking anyone who lives in the area or works in the area of the attack to call them if they saw anything suspicious. They say even the smallest piece of evidence could be critical in this case.

Laube was a member of the Xtreme Edge gym in Beaverton, where staff and members are devastated.

"Dedicated, smart, pretty, unaffected. She had no ego. She's just giving," said Bob Briede, the gym owner. "That's what makes this so hard. That she's one of those rare people that everybody loved."

Jerome Saint-Cyr planned to train with Laube on Wednesday. He said Laube recently took the job at the apartment complex because she would be able to get home in time to put her kids to bed.

"She usually had to close the place at night. I think she was telling me they were short-handed at the moment, and she was giving it her all because she wanted to get the next position up," he said.

Laube's father is the head pastor at Calvary Church in Hillsboro, where the entire congregation is in shock. Matthew Dodd, another pastor at the church, has known Laube since she was 10 and watched her overcome Kawasaki disease as a child and cancer as a teenager.

"To see this type of thing happen, it just catches you off guard because she's overcome so much," Dodd said. "(It's) such a tragedy and you think only things are going to get better and this really blind sides you."

A Facebook post from Team DreamQuest, a bodybuilding team, also expressed grief over her death.

"She had inner and outer beauty with a heart that was never too full for anyone. A fierce competitor admired by so many in our bodybuilding community, and the finest example of great sportsmanship," the post said. "Prayers to her family - especially hugs to her children. Even if you never met Nicole, please keep her in your thoughts. She would've been a wonderful friend, mother, daughter, or sister to you."

A prayer service is being held at the church of Laube's father on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
