RAFAH, GAZA (FOX) - Israeli officials say they are considering the option of renewing Egyptian-led truce talks in the Middle East, but not before launching a series of airstrikes into Gaza killing three top leaders of Hamas.

A series of aggressive airstrikes along the Gaza Strip on Thursday, one of them fired from Israel, killing three senior commanders of the militant group Hamas.

This is the second attack targeting top leaders there in two days.

"The IDF carried out a targeted attack against Mohammed Abu Shamaleh and Raed Attar. We did that because of their extensive involvement in terrorist activities," said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli military spokesman.

Hamas confirmed the deaths and releasing video of the three men shortly after.

Thousands of people lined the streets in southern Gaza for their funerals.

The Israeli army also released video. That footage showing the airstrike which killed the commanders, and three others.

Israeli officials say those three commanders are responsible for many of Hamas' military capabilities over the past few years, including tunnels leading into Israel.

"This action joins many other preventive activities we've launched against deadly operations that Hamas and other terror organizations have planned to carry out," said Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister.

Meanwhile, the civilian death toll in Palestinian regions continues to rise, raising more serious questions about humanitarian needs in the region.

"The situation is truly very dire in terms of the impact and the toll that this has had on children. Fifty psychologists and counselors are reaching out as quickly as they possibly can, but the needs are staggering," said Pernille Ironside, Chief of the UNICEF Gaza Field Office.

Israel's airstrikes also hit smuggling tunnels along the Gaza border with Egypt.

Gaza did retaliate, firing rockets into Israel.

Those attacks are having little impact.
