WASHINGTON, DC (FOX) - A new report that highlights the dangers of school zones shows 100 children are killed each year traveling to school.

An additional 25,000 are injured, and a majority of the accidents are a result of drivers speeding through school zones.

Charles Territo, a spokesman for American Traffic Solutions, said a new initiative and awareness campaign is meant to bring light and a solution to the problem.

A particular area of focus is school bus stop arms, which many people are prone to ignore.

"I will tell you that one thing we found is that once the law is being enforced - for school bus stop arm running, in particular - 99 percent of the drivers who receive a violation don't receive a second," Territo said. "Some of the school districts that we've worked with have seen as much as a 50 percent reduction in the number of school bus stop arm running violations that occur since they've began enforcing school bus stop arm violations more strictly, and the same for school zone speed. The more school zone speed enforcement that occurs, the safer those school zones get.

"Education and enforcement are two very important parts of solving this problem."
